Additional Information

• At the time of William’s death, his battalion was part of 111th Brigade which was itself part of the 37th Division. They took part in the Arras Offensive and from 9th-11th April, his battalion fought at the Second Battle of the Scarpe. This is probably where he was killed.
• William’s father was also named William Varnham Brooks.
• His father was a Police Constable in Borrowash.
• In the 1930’s he became a local councillor for the village.
• He died in 1954, leaving a substantial legacy to his widow, Elizabeth.
