In 1942, Tom Matchett started work at ‘Coates the Butcher’ in Borrowash.

He was 15 years old and the Victoria Avenue business was a popular fixture in the village with a growing reputation for service.

War and Peace – Geoff Oakey

William Barron; gardener to the Earls of Harrington, was a nurseryman who designed Elvaston Castle’s distinctive and elegant gardens in the 19th century.

The fifth Earl, Leicester Stanhope, died in 1862, and Barron then built a business in Borrowash; winning an international reputation for landscape gardening, tree transplantation and Public Park design.

Bloso Fields

One of the contacts through the Society’s website asked about a family living at Bloso Fields in the 1920s.  This prompted some research on this house on Victoria Avenue just north of Deans Drive. The old house is now divided into three homes.

In The Shadow of Saint-Quentin – Jack Slater

The 1918 Battle of Mont Saint-Quentin resulted in a famous victory for the Allied forces; characterised as much by its strategic importance as the acknowledged gallantry and daring of the troops.

General Henry Rawlinson who commanded the British Fourth Army spoke about the battle in grandiose terms, describing the Australian advances in the five day window of August 31st – September 4th as the outstanding military achievement of the First World War.

The Family Way – Lily Pidgeon

Lily Pidgeon, one of nine children and mother of ten, has lived in sheltered accommodation since the death of her husband in 1992.

Ron, who worked at the Rolls Royce Associates Nuclear Department, took early retirement and the couple enjoyed a decade of leisure, epitomised by continental holidays and a memorable ruby wedding anniversary celebration.

Borrowash Junior was the first school I taught at after graduating.  I was Miss Malpas in those days. I taught Second Year Juniors.

The Boomers, born in a ‘baby boom’ between 1944 – 1964 (and whose numbers include the likes of Tony Blair, Sigourney Weaver and Bill and Hillary Clinton) have long been termed the ‘golden’ generation; high earners; beneficiaries of a munificent state – and above all, ‘game changers.’
