There is doubt about George’s date of death. His wife wrote to the War Office asking for confirmation of the date. The letter is very faded with time and, possibly, made fainter by the scanning process. The date she wrote is has either faded or been obscured by War Office marks.
She received a formal reply on 12th December 1919, stating: “A report has been received from the War Office, to the effect that it is now accepted that he was killed in action or died of wounds on, or shortly after, 24th April 19xx (1918).”
